Urban Title I School
2013-2014
When I applied to the Elementary Education program, I asked to be in a Title I school. I also asked for the most challenging placement possible, because I wanted to gain as much experience as I could while I had an extremely strong support system. When I was placed at Bennion I was very excited for what the year would have in store for me. In my class there are 22 students. I have nine ELL students, and there are four languages spoken other than English; Spanish, Chinese, Maori, and Burmese. Not only do we have cultural differences, we also have some physical differences. I have one student with Cerebral Palsy, and another who suffers from chronic seaziures. I have four students that are served by a speech therapist, and two students served in Special Education. On top of all diversity I have many students who live in a domestic abuse shelter, and 95% are in poverty. Needless to say I got what I asked for... a challenge. However, it is my belief that the greater the challenge, the greater the reward, and I have never been more right! I have loved every day that I have been able to teach the students of Bennion Elementary. Everyday I was able to learn something from my students. The growth that I have made personally and in my teaching is phenomenal, and I owe it all to my students and my mentor. Student teaching for almost an entire academic year has been such a great learning experience and I feel very prepared to become a teacher and have my own classroom. I can't wait to see what the future has in store for me!
