Teaching begins with the learner. To ensure that each student learns new knowledge and skills, teachers must understand that learning and developmental patterns vary among individuals, that learners bring unique individual differences to the learning process, and that learners need supportive and safe learning environments to thrive.

Standard 1: Learner Development
Description: The teacher understands cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional and physical areas of student development.
Artifact: Math Centers Unit 6: Graphing, Fractions, Time, Attributes of 2-D and 3-D Shapes.
Rationale:This artifact demonstrates the teachers knowledge of how to create developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experiences based on each student's strengths, interests, and needs through the use of differentiated math centers.

Rationale: These artifacts focuses heavily on teaching students how to utilize tools of inquiry, and bring in real world application to learning. I modeled my knowledge of these tools to assist students in creating their own graphs to correspond with various projects and assignments; as well as introducing and conducting a service learning project.

Artifact: Voki Videocasting: Ben's Question
Rationale: This artifact is a perfect example of how I created an authentic learning experience for students using technology. Students are required to respond via voki to a question of the day that will assist students in gaining content knowledge of the subject. This is also a great teacher tool to monitor comprehension of the concept.
